As Hurricane Sandy devastated the American Northeast during late October 2012, the storm became the largest-diameter Atlantic hurricane on record, and its effects were felt as far away as the upper Great Lakes. Shipping traffic was slowed as some vessels sought shelter, and gale warnings were issued for Lake Michigan, while waves of 20 feet swept down the open waters.
